Blues’ fitness a barrier for Leigh

ONE of the more unusual events in the racing calendar is the annual reunion of the Exiles CC. This club brings together cyclists who served in the Suez Canal military zone during the 1940s and 1950s. One of these is Macclesfield Wheelers’ Terry Wesley. Now 73, Wesley has been cycling for 60 years. Not only a top rider in his day, with many club records to his name, Wesley was mechanic for the national junior squad, the Milk Race and the Tour of Britain, as well as being a mentor to current top pros David Millar and Bradley Wiggins.

Moment of madness sees Silkmen lose out to Lincoln

SILKMEN skipper Sean Hessey buried his head in hands on Tuesday evening, and looked to the heavens, after his appalling error handed Lincoln a 2 - 1 win their performance had simply not merited.

Burke wins first senior cyclo-cross race

YOUNG Wheeler Lewis Burke took a convincing victory last Wednesday evening in his first senior cyclo-cross race after numerous wins as a schoolboy. Burke got off to a fast start on a demanding course at Reddish Vale, Stockport, and never looked back, increasing his lead lap after lap to win from a strong field of over 40 competitors. Veteran Brian Renshaw also completed the event, his first in a few years. The under 12s event also proved highly successful for the Wheelers: nine-year-old Thomas Bowers finished in third place in only his second event and first-timer eight-year-old sister Josie finished equal fourth.

Inter-League Cup Final AFTER missing out in the Subsidiary Cup, Mary Dendy deservedly secured their first trophy in seven seasons after defeating Bentley from the Crewe and District league in a tight game at the Cumberland Arena, Crewe.
