MP GRAHAM Brady has hit out at the Government's drugs advice strategy.

Speaking during Home Office Questions in the House of Commons, he challenged ministers over their "Talk Frank' campaign.

Mr Brady said that the evidence linking cannabis and mental health was alarming' and he claimed it clearly indicated that the drug triggered schizophrenia and psychosis.

Yet the Government's Talk to Frank' campaign only suggests that teenagers with existing mental health problems should avoid it: He said to Home Office minister Vernon Coaker: "Does the minister accept that that could mislead young people into believing that, if they have no history of mental health problems, it is safe to take cannabis? Will he ensure that the advice is strengthened to make it clear?"

Mr Coaker said he would look at the issue but he did not accept Mr Brady's point.

Speaking later Mr Brady said: I am very concerned that the information available to young people does not do enough to warn them about the real dangers of smoking cannabis.

"The evidence is that cannabis can trigger serious mental health problems such as schizophrenia. Issuing a warning to those who already have mental health problems is simply not good enough and is putting young people in danger.

"I am glad that the minister has promised to look into the matter. I sincerely hope that he does and that he acts quickly to strengthen the warning."

why isn't holland suffering too?
i wonder if this man has connections to any
pharma companies?

Another clueless politician coming out with unsubstantiated nonsense.

Ok there is a sllight risk of mental health problems with young users bingeing on Cannabis even the Lancet reports authors put this figure at around 800.THis is not to belittle the damage done to the users or their familes but lets get some perspective here.8,324 KILLED from alcohol last year 126,000 in long term care with mental health problems due to alcohol .THe risks of death and mental health problems caused by alcohol make those caused by Cannabis look like a drop in the ocean.

As for the science at the moment their is no proven direct link between cannabis and mental health what there is is an associative link which means that people with mental health problems over use Cannabis as they self medicate. The CBD's in Cannabis are potently anti psychotic certain strains high in CBD's as suggested by Kings College London last year would be beneficial for those suffering from psychosis to smoke an impossibility while the distribution of Cananbis is in the hands of gangsters.

What is proved is that leaving the supply of cannabis in the hands of Violent gnagsters does not protect our children.Regulate and control the use of Cannabis for adults by the Government for our kids sake.

Cannabis is a trigger for schizophrenia, end of. My 24 year old daughter has been struck down with this disease due to using cannabis. The psychiatric hospitals are full of youngsters who are only in hospital because of cannabis. The people who are selling this stuff should be severely punished, cannabis has ruined the life of my daughter, her 3 year old daughter (who she can no longer care for) and the whole family. As a mother watching your child suffer with severe mental illness is heart wrenching. If persons have the "gene" this is the result. Ban cannabis and save lives.

Just because alcOhol also does harm does not mean we should not try to reduce the cannabis usage of young people.

I'm well aware that in most cases users of cannabis are not given mental illnesses; however some, through excessive usage; are.

In much the same way that Holland has no problem with people 'binge smoking' and getting ill, it also has no problem with 'binge drinking'. It's the endulgent attitude of the British public that makes us susceptable to these risks, as we actually will harm ourselves just to have a good time. In Holland they don't do that.

Whether or not the current laws are in sync with the rest of the laws about substance use (I say alcohol should be just as illegal as cannabis) doesnt mean the cannabis laws don't need to be addressed.

As Elaine clearly states; it's not causing death - but it is causing a lot of harm and damage, not only to the individual, but to their carers and dependants. It's because of this associated cost that action is being taken.

Oh and you can review Mmebers Interests by contacting the House of Commons. Mr Brady would have had to declare any share ownership or directorships of pharmaceutical companies.

Matt, Altrincham,
Why should those of us who are sensible cannabis users and adults get locked up because of the idiot bingers?
Prohibition hardly puts in place measures that limit children's access to cannabis either.

And Elaine,
Cannabis has not been proven to have a causative link to schizophrenia. The worst report attempting to find such s link found that those with the 'gene' only had the risk increase by less than 10% and even that risk rapidly diminished when people became adults.
Your daughter became sick under prohibition, what makes you think that more of the same will help any other child?
